On OpenLearning, Course Creators have the unique opportunity to connect with their students, engage and motivate them to make the most out of their learning.

Your role as a facilitator is crucial in helping your students become confident, inquisitive and connected learners.

In this blog post, we will outline our platform’s Notifications and Subscriptions features that may help to facilitate your students effectively.

1. Platform Notifications (Web)

Notifications will let you know when students are interacting inside your course, such as when they are posting comments on course pages.

To set up notifications, Course Administrators can head to Course Setup -> Community and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

If you are an Administrator, you can tick the box “Notify all of the facilitators of all comments in their class”.

Notifications Checklist OpenLearning

As a facilitator, you will be notified about all high-level comments made by students in the course (high-level comments do not include replies to existing comments). To look at your notifications, Notifications Icon OpenLearningclick the Orange Notification Bell Icon at the top of the page. The icon looks like this:

Platform notifications are useful to keep you updated with the conversations happening in your course.

As a facilitator, you can quickly reply to students enquiries and actively engage with them throughout their learning journey!

2. Page Subscriptions (Web)

Every page inside your course will include an option for you to Subscribe or Unsubscribe.

This allows you to have control over the types and number of notifications you receive. You also have the option to select pages you would like to have a closer look throughout the course.

Subscriptions Options OpenLearning

If a Course Admin checked the box “Notify all of the facilitators of all comments in their class (see first image)”, all facilitators are automatically subscribed to every page in the course. Note that you will only be notified about comments in the course, not about posts.

If you wish to customise your subscriptions or receive notifications about specific posts made by students, you can do it manually on the selected page. Keep a lookout for the Subscribe or Subscribed tab at the end of each page.

  • Tip 1: If you created a sub-page that is not included in Learning Activities module set, you will need to manually subscribe to this page to make sure you are notified about new comments.
  • Tip 2: If you want to be 100% certain that you do not unintentionally overlook important comment or post in your course, ask your students to tag you (or any other facilitator or student) @name. You will then receive a notification.

Students also have an option to Subscribe or Unsubscribe from the selected pages. This will allow them to follow the page, activities and interactions.

For example, a student identified a learning gap — and now he or she is particularly interested in a page content and activities, posts or comments by other students; or they wish to learn more about the concept. They can subscribe to page(s) and follow the interactions by other students.

You can use our Notifications and Subscription features to keep track with students’ progress and also to stay updated with their interactions inside the course! Other than these two features, we also encourage you to use your course feed to monitor activities happening across all pages in the course – including posts, comments, and replies.

Have you ever used our Notifications and Subscription features for other activities? Let us know in the comment section below!
